Finally, It’s that time of year! After month’s of research and trial runs, the draft is just about here which means its time for my stab at predicting the entire thing. Every year, I take a shot at a full 7 round mock with my goal being to predict the picks as correctly as possible.
There will be trades, but I will not be making any additional trades after Round 1. Things just become too unpredictable at that point.
DISCLAIMER: This was nearly done at the time of the Arod trade, so I decided not to go back and change the picks. It would've been too difficult at that point, but you'll see that I wasn't all that far off!
If you want to view all of the picks for a certain team or even skip the commentary, I've added an easy to filter spreadsheet here:
CardiO 7 Round Mock Spreadsheet
This is my final mock of the 2023 season, but I will be putting out a final Round 1 addendum the day of the draft. Things are constantly changing leading up to the draft and the addendum allows me to adjust to all of the new info that comes out while finishing rounds 2-7. Without further ado, let’s get rippin’:
Round 1
1. Carolina Panthers - QB Anthony Richardson Florida:
Alright, I’ve been mocking this just about since the trade happened and I believe there are some signs pointing things in this direction. I’ve mentioned before that you don’t make this trade immediately after the combine if someone didn’t win you over specifically at the event. Who had that type of performance that’s not Anthony Richardson? We knew who Young and Stroud were, they looked great and interviewed great but that was the expectation going in. I have a hard time believing one of those two sealed the deal there. There’s also been rumblings that Richardson is Reich’s guy but the whole organization may not have bought in yet. I totally believe that, Reich’s a QB guru and is probably champing at the bit to work with Richardson’s skills. The new HC needs to get his guy at QB or the marriage won’t work, Reich will get his guy and all signs point to that being Richardson.
2. Houston Texans - QB Bryce Young Alabama:
This is another one that I’ve been mocking for a while now. DeMeco Ryans has made it clear that experience and the ability to win is what he values in his future franchise QB. I think Houston is happy seeing how the cards fall and picking between Young and Stroud. In this case both are still available, but Young is an undeniable fit for what Houston is looking for and planning to do going forward. Some people have speculated that they don’t go QB here and look for one at 12. That will 100% not happen. They want Young or Stroud, and there’s urgency with Indy sitting at 4.
Pick 3 TRADE Arizona Cardinals to Indianapolis Colts
Colts get #3 and a 2024 7th - Cardinals get #4, a 3rd Rounder (#79), and a 2024 6th
3. Indianapolis Colts - QB C.J. Stroud Ohio State:
As time’s gone on, I think it’s become a pretty clear top 3 at QB with Levis ending up a clear tier down from Young, Stroud, and Richardson. This makes the stakes very high for Indy at 4, as if they agree with this, they don’t control their own fate when it comes to getting one of those top tier QBs. While giving up a 3rd and a late 2024 trade down seems like a lot to move up one spot… it isn’t a lot when it means getting the potential #1 QB in this draft.
Indy needs one of those top QBs for this to be a successful draft and start to the Shane Steichen era. That said, I believe Indy could still grab Stroud at 4 and both teams will get the same player regardless of the trade. This all comes down to new Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort. If Ossenfort is the guy Arizona needs him to be, he’ll be able to sell the interest in the 3rd pick and force Indy’s hand. In this case, he still gets his guy at 4 but adds some capital in the process.
4. Arizona Cardinals - Edge Will Anderson Jr. Alabama:
Once again, The Cards move back one spot and still get their guy. Arizona’s defensive roster is looking pretty rough right now, so the pick needs to be best available and that’s clearly Anderson at this point. He’ll start and be their best pass rusher from day 1.
5. Seattle Seahawks - DL Jalen Carter Georgia:
This is where things get dicey, the top 4 picks are almost locks in some variation unless Arizona moves out with someone other than Indy (That could cloud things a bit). This is a spot where a trade back is very possible and what I'd expect the Hawks to try and do. That said, I just don't think the markets there unless someone desperately wants to lock down Tyree Wilson. Seattle has several needs that will be addressed, while DL is a place for upgrade it isn't necessarily a must have this early on. I try to look at visits and get a feel for what everyone's looking at, and interestingly enough, Seattle has really only taken a deep dive with QBs and Carter when it comes to potential top 5 picks. This may mean they're already sold on someone like Wilson and don't need an interview but I doubt it. I think Seattle is quietly prepping to take Carter if he's there and they can't move back from 5. He's a top 2 player available at this point, and gives them an option as a run stuffer and a 3-technique. I do believe Pete Carroll is the type of coach that could get him back on track. If they could move back in that 8 to 10 range with a Wilson suiter, they may still have a shot at Carter with a little less risk.
6. Detroit Lions - Edge Tyree Wilson Texas Tech:
With a lack of major needs, Detroit is a prime candidate to trust their board here and go best available, especially considering the best available players all fill needs/wants. This is another spot where a trade down is possible, Atlanta and Vegas both seem hot on Wilson so I could see Atlanta attempting to leapfrog here. Whether they won’t pay the asking price or Detroit doesn’t see the value since they already hold 5 picks through days 1 and 2, I don’t think a trade gets done. Wilson is best available and gives them an awesome pass rush tandem for years to come. Side note: While the Okudah trade feels like a clear tell that Detroit is taking a CB, they have those 5 picks in rounds 1-3. They signed several good DBs who are slated to start at CB and Nickel, there’s no desperation. So, The Lions will take a CB with one of those picks it just doesn’t need to be here.
7. Las Vegas Raiders - CB Christian Gonzalez Oregon:
I see two positions in play here: CB and OT. The Raiders could consider moving down a few picks and letting someone else help them make the decision, but once again I don't think the trade down value is really there. Not to mention that Vegas has plenty of picks at their disposal. Gonzalez feels like the clear best option here. First, while OL is a clear need, McDaniels' crew needs a big overhaul on defense and didn't make any real splashes in the offseason. So, why Gonzalez over Witherspoon? Gonzalez simply has less questions. He's tested off the charts, isn't coming off an injury, and plays a much safer style of ball than Witherspoon. While Witherspoon could be a homerun in the right scheme (Which I do believe Vegas is a fit), Gonzalez projects to fairly safely become a CB1 and play at a high level right away.
8. Atlanta Falcons - WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba Ohio State:
Now I know what you're thinking, but yes, I'm really not going defense here. The Falcons could use reinforcements at CB and Edge but both spots have plenty of recent investments which may still pay off. Smith-Njigba is becoming the clear #1 receiver in this draft and The Falcons are starved for playmakers on offense. They need to get Desmond Ridder a true top weapon if they want him to have a chance to succeed and Arthur Smith clearly doesn't want that to be Kyle Pitts. It could be Smith-Njigba or possibly Bijan Robinson, but either way Atlanta has a tremendous chance of striking gold here.
9. Chicago Bears - OT Peter Skoronski Northwestern:
This is another interesting situation, Chicago desperately needs help all over their defense especially at Edge. In addition to Edge Rushers, they could go with a different Tackle here or go another route altogether with Bijan Robinson or Devon Witherspoon. They spent a lot of time with the other top OTs in this draft, indicating a desire to better protect Fields. They've been all in on building up this offense to see if he's their guy, and additional protection feels like a major hurdle they haven't crossed. I have them going with the hometown kid here, there was no need to have additional interviews with Skoronski because they already knew what was there. They've also had a penchant for taking undersized tackles in the past. Skoronski could bump inside until he's ready for perimeter duties, but I think he'd be their best bet at LT from day 1 and The Bears won't be worried about his size.
10. Philadelphia Eagles - HB Bijan Robinson Texas:
This pick is just a perfect match at this point. It's worth noting that this is another team that's shown heavy interest in some of the draft's top Edge Rushers (I could see Murphy or Van Ness here). What we're seeing is that teams may decide to wait on Edge because of how deep the position group is and opt for similarly graded stars at thin positions. Philly can build on Defense plenty later, Hurts was let down by his supporting cast in the Super Bowl and that group has only gotten worse with the departure of Miles Sanders. Robinson is the type of playmaker that can put Philly over the top. Who cares if RBs have a short shelf life if the guy wins you a title, right?
11. Tennessee Titans - Edge Nolan Smith Georgia:
This has to be the biggest surprise of my mock thus far, but let me tell you why it shouldn't be. The popular pick for Tennessee seems to be OT, but similar to some other teams we've discussed, there's several recent investments there that may still pay off (Dillard, Petit-Frere, Radunz). Tennessee has had some bad luck drafting Tackles but still finds themselves in an okay spot to open the season. Receiver and Edge are much bigger needs. So, why Smith over Van Ness or Murphy? I believe Smith could be a top 10 prospect for teams running the right scheme, and Tennessee should be one of those teams. He offers unparalleled speed and explosiveness as an Edge Rusher and Base 3-4 OLB. In a scheme like Tennessee's, he could be on the field every down. Van Ness offers some value playing multiple positions in a 3-4 but none of those are ideal, and he would be a much better fit and just as versatile in a 4-3. Smith has huge upside for Vrabel's crew and Tennessee has the depth to rotate him out and bring him along at the right pace. That said, moving back a bit for Quentin Johnston is also on the table, I believe The Titans are very high on him.
12. Houston Texans - Edge Myles Murphy Clemson:
I think Edge Rusher is a slam dunk here for Houston, it's one of their major needs and DeMeco Ryans gets a chance to draft a defensive toy. In San Fran during the Ryans era, they we're very focused on building upfront defensively and mostly stuck to true Edges rather than hybrid guys like Van Ness. Houston's also hosted Murphy for a private meeting but has yet to show any major interest in Van Ness which I think is very telling. All signs point to Murphy being the better fit for Ryans' attack, and Van Ness remains as the last top tier Edge after this run.
Pick 13 TRADE New York Jets to Detroit Lions
Lions get #13 - Jets get #18 and a 3rd Rounder (#81)
13. Detroit Lions - CB Devon Witherspoon Illinois:
First off, The Jets will be looking to trade back here. I’m projecting they send both of their 2nds and a conditional pick to Green Bay in the impending Rodgers trade. More on that later, but that all said they’ll be looking to add some more picks later in the draft. If they’re targeting who I think they are, they’ll be fine bumping back to 18.
For Detroit, this is tough. Witherspoon is such a good value at 13 and feels like the final piece of their defensive overhaul. I honestly believe with this pick, they’re in the mix for the NFC title. The reason this is tough is that I really believe Detroit would love to get Hooker or Levis to build for the future. They still have two 2nds to move back up but I have a hard time seeing that now. This will lesson the pressure on teams like Minnesota and Vegas to move up for one of those guys.
14. New England Patriots - DL/Edge Lukas Van Ness Iowa:
New England is set up nicely here, they have their pick between the last of the top tier Edges and two fantastic OTs. Witherspoon would’ve been a great option as well if Detroit didn’t move up to lock him down. While OT is a bit of a bigger need with Riley Reiff slated to start at RT, Van Ness just feels like too big of a talent to pass up here. Belichick loves these hybrid style players on Defense and will move Van Ness all around the field. OT is deep enough to be addressed in the second round, I believed they’ll have Van Ness rated at the top of their board at this point.
Pick 15 TRADE Green Bay Packers to Minnesota Vikings
Vikings get #15 and a 5th Rounder (#170) - Packers get #23 and a 2024 1st Rounder
15. Minnesota Vikings - QB Hendon Hooker Tennessee:
Well NFC North fans, looks like I have a pretty exciting draft for you. The price is a bit high here, I could see Minnesota finding a way to finagle a deal for #23 and a '24 second but if I'm Green Bay, I'm not giving a rival their future franchise QB for anything less than 2 1sts. Minnesota may have more picks to deal after a potential Dalvin Cook trade as well. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has shown he's not afraid to get aggressive and if Hooker is his guy, that's what he'll have to do. There's interest in Hooker at 16 with Was, 19 with TB, and 20 with Sea. That second tier of QBs is going to move in these middle selections.
As far as the pick is concerned, A rumor is a rumor..... except when its not. I really believe there's merit to Minnesota's rumored interest in QB prospects, specifically Hooker. Adofo-Mensah has done a brilliant job deploying a gradual rebuild. What I mean by that is, he's been able to shift the roster to a younger nucleus while maintaining contender status. The current build of this roster shows no absolute must haves, that would change a bit with a Cook deal but there isn't a slam dunk RB here anyway. This makes it a great situation for Hooker to ease his way into the NFL on a contender and behind a pro bowl caliber teacher. Cousins is getting old, his contract is expiring, and he wasn't this regime's guy to begin with. Kevin O'Connell is a former QB and the type of coach that would love to develop his long term starter, with Hooker he gets his guy and cements the new era of Viking football.
16. Washington Commanders - CB Joey Porter Jr. Penn State:
Washington stays put in this mock and lets some other teams make the hard decisions for them. I believe they would've also considered moving up for Witherspoon as Detroit did, but they have less fire power and disparity between their grades on him and Porter. I do believe that Washington is content rolling with Howell for now and seeing if they have something, but I think there's a bit of interest here in Hooker. Minnesota makes that decision for them. At this pick, its Corner or OT. I think there will be interest in Broderick Jones and Paris Johnson, but Washington has been tied heavily to Porter. While Porter is likely graded by most between Witherspoon and Banks, he's closer to Witherspoon and won't fall much lower than this spot.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers - OT Paris Johnson Jr. Ohio State:
Things work out pretty nicely for Pittsburgh in this draft, the Skoronski pick at 9 could easily start a run on Tackles but this time there's just too much defensive talent out there to allow it. That said, I could realistically see Johnson going anywhere from 7 to 17. Vegas, Chicago, Philly, New England, Green Bay, The Jets, and Washington are all potential suitors. I think he's Pittsburgh's guy and I doubt there's anyway his slide lasts past this pick. He's a great value here. There were times when I looked at the Steelers to potentially move up to 13 or 15 to lock him down, but they stay patient and are rewarded. Washington makes the last hard decision for Pittsburgh as with Porter and Johnson both on the clock at 16, The Steelers will be prepped to take whichever Washington doesn't. If they were both somehow here, I still believe Johnson is the pick.
18. New York Jets - C John Michael Schmitz Minnesota:
Refer back to my earlier statements about the Jets moving back from 13, I believe that Schmitz is who they're targeting all along. There's potential for interest here from teams trying to move up for either Broderick Jones or Will Levis, but if The Jets like Schmitz as much as I think, they won't be willing to slide back again. There hasn't been a lot of people mocking him in the first but I believe The Jets, Giants, Seahawks, and Vikings all have mid-1st round grades on him at the very least. New York has been all over him throughout the pre-draft process holding meetings with him at the Combine and his Pro Day in addition to an Official 30 Visit and Private Workout. I think there's some other solid Centers in this draft but Schmitz has really set himself apart as the best in class. A lot of people have NYJ taking an OT but I'd rather roll into the season starting a combination of Becton, Brown, and Mitchell at OT than Schweitzer at C.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - QB Will Levis Kentucky:
This is a slam dunk pick for Tampa at 19, not having to move to get a guy who may teams view as a potential top 10 pick and franchise QB is quite a steal. I think The Bucs are content going into the season with Baker Mayfield and Trask, and seeing if they have something in one of the two. That said, while they have quite a bit of room for improvement, there are no absolute must-haves for them in this draft. That will allow them to go best available and grab a guy who they hope will become the face of their franchise. Several teams (possibly including Seattle) will look to leapfrog them and grab Levis at 18, but in this scenario that door never opens.
20. Seattle Seahawks - OT Broderick Jones Georgia:
While OT is still somewhat of a need, this is purely a best player available pick. Seattle will have several offers from teams looking to hop up above The Chargers to grab Jones. While Quentin Johnston and Deonte Banks are both good fits, high on their board, and at other positions of need, Jones has no business being available here. Seattle still holds two 2nds and will address those positions as well as add another Edge later on. At this point they figure they're better served ending his slide themselves rather than adding more picks. With the addition of Jones, they'll form a fantastic young OT tandem and allow Abraham Lucas to bump inside and create some healthy competition for one of the Guard spots.
21. Los Angeles Chargers - S/NB Brian Branch Alabama:
I mocked this last time too, this just feels like a really great match. I could see them adding some line/edge depth here with Keion White, Adebawore, or Kancey but the first two feel like reaches at 21 and the latter doesn't feel like a good scheme fit. Branch is a really good value here and likely the highest rated player on several teams' boards at this point. The departure of Adderley at Safety leaves a spot for Branch to slide in ahead of Alohi Gilman but he’ll still get plenty of reps at Nickel with LA’s underwhelming Corner group.
22. Baltimore Ravens - CB Deonte Banks Maryland:
Baltimore has been very invested in this classes receivers for the last few weeks, but while I could see Johnston as the pick here, I think Odell lessons that desperation a bit. They've also taken an extensive look at the class' CBs which is a much bigger need with Marcus Peters' departure. While they appear to like Emmanuel Forbes a lot, I believe Banks is a much better player at this spot. His athletic prowess and high ceiling make him a steal at 22 and Baltimore can afford to take a chance on some of his less developed traits with Marlon Humphrey and a slew of '21 & '22 draft picks in house. It also doesn't hurt that he's the hometown guy. Side note: O'Cyrus Torrence should quietly be in the mix here as well.
23. Green Bay Packers - TE Dalton Kincaid Utah:
Green Bay moved back from 15 with their eyes set on a few players. I believe they slid back hoping to get one of the draft's top TEs or Brian Branch, they get their pick of the litter at the former but missed by just a few picks on the latter. Kincaid could've been the pick still if they had stayed at 15 but they would've given some serious consideration to Paris Johnson Jr. The Pack desperately need a Tight End and are still fairly lacking when it comes to weapons for their young QB Jordan Love. While Michael Mayer feels a bit more like a traditional Packer TE, Kincaid is a much more dynamic weapon which is exactly what they need here. This pick will help Love develop and give him a lot more confidence in his options when dropping back.
24. Jacksonville Jaguars - WR Quentin Johnston TCU:
The Jags will be looking to move up, as what they really need are reinforcements in the defensive backfield. Unfortunately for them, they wiff on making a move to 18 or 20 and miss out on the early 20's DB run. That said, I mocked them taking a WR last time in Addison but they would've loved Johnston if he was available. The Jags have yet to really invest in a rookie receiver during the TLaw era, which in my opinion is a mistake. They've built a good WR core for Lawrence through free agency but they need to get him another long term piece to grow with. Zay Jones and Kirk have been inconsistent at times and we don't know what Ridley will look like after his time off. This makes adding to the receiver room a must. Jacksonville's WR group also lacks size and a true deep threat, Johnston checks both of those boxes. He may not be in a lead role right away, but he'll have some huge games as a rookie with TLaw and this offense.
25. New York Giants - WR Jordan Addison USC:
I don't love this, but this feels like the pick here. Even though they don't have a clear #1, New York is pretty deep at Receiver and they've felt that way for years. If oft injured players like Sterling Shepard and Paris Campbell can stay healthy, I'd honestly feel pretty good about Daniel Jones' supporting cast but that's the issue, they can't stay healthy. The Giants have 6 solid WRs but nearly every one of them has had some level of injury trouble. Out of that group, there's also no clear #1. While I'd feel okay rolling the dice with this group, I think Brian Daboll is fed up and wants to provide some consistency for his franchise QB. They've spent a lot of time with these WRs, specifically Hyatt, Flowers, and Addison. While I'd like to see them add a bigger bodied target, Addison is clearly the top wideout on the board. His route running prowess and natural hands will remind Daboll a bit of his former WR1: Stefon Diggs.
26. Dallas Cowboys - OT Darnell Wright Tennessee:
Dallas has been known for the skill of their offensive lines dating all the way back to the 70s. While this era of Cowboy football has come to an end, their OLine has begun to fall apart. This is the foundation of a good Cowboy team and they will invest to keep it as a strong suit. That's precisely why I have them making a very similar pick to their 1st rounder last year in Tyler Smith. Wright is a powerful blocker who fits Dallas' scheme very well, those are the same types of traits they coveted in Smith last year. So why two tackles in a row? First off, Terence Steele is not an ideal starter at RT. The Cowboys will hope to see either Smith or Wright step up and handle those duties in '23. The player who doesn't take the RT job will hold down LG. While both may be better suited at Guard in the NFL, the Cowboys will hope one is able to rise to the challenge at RT this year. That said, the great Tyron Smith's days are numbered. Best case within the next 3 to 4 years: Tyler Smith takes over LT and Wright holds down RT making a phenomenal Tackle tandem. Worst Case: One of them is forced to hold down the right side while the other remains entrenched at Guard. Wright will also be #1 on many teams boards at this point.
27. Buffalo Bills - OG O'Cyrus Torrence Florida:
This is a really nice spot for Buffalo here. They can still grab a top tier wideout if getting Allen more weapons is the big concern. They can also have their pick of the litter at LB to fill Edmunds shoes, but I have them opting to protect Allen with Torrence here. Brandon Beane has been reluctant to build up his IOL and I believe it's caused both Allen and their running game to suffer a bit. Beane's been clear that keeping Allen's health in one piece is a top priority for the future and they've spent quite a bit of time getting to know Torrence. Let's put 2 and 2 together here and call it a match. P.S. I also wouldn't count out Drew Sanders or Trenton Simpson here, LB is a huge part of what Buffalo does and both would be great fits for different reasons.
28. Cincinnati Bengals - TE Michael Mayer Notre Dame:
There seems to be some clear interest at CB in Cincy, so I wouldn't count out Emmanuel Forbes being the pick here. The addition of Irv Smith Jr. to this formerly desolate TE room clouds things a bit, but once again this is another pick and fit that's just too good to pass up. Much like how Kincaid was the perfect fit for the needs of GB, Mayer fits like a glove for Cincinnati. Despite heavy investment sin the OLine over the last two years protecting Joe Burrow continues to be paramount. Mayer offers a complete profile with outstanding in-line blocking ability and the strength/perception to find soft spots and make the tough catches underneath. Irv Smith Jr. gives them the dynamic athlete popular at TE today, while Mayer offers a more old school option who can help with every facet of this offense.
29. New Orleans Saints - DL/Edge Adetomiwa Adebawore Northwestern:
There's a lot of fantastic D-Lineman left that would be really strong fits in NOLA. While I'd personally go Kancey here, NO seems infatuated with the big, athletic lineman who can play a hybrid 3-Technique/Edge role (Adebawore and Keion White). Adebawore killed the combine and has risen up boards in a hurry, and all throughout that process New Orleans has felt like a perfect match. I mocked them trading back into the 2nd to grab him in the last mock but he's been picking up so much momentum that it's no longer worth taking the chance. He's a riser and the end of the 1st is starting to feel like a real landing spot for him.
30. Philadelphia Eagles - DT Calijah Kancey Pitt:
Philly has spent a lot of time with defensive prospects this year and if we read into that it would indicate that an early D-Line investment is coming but maybe with the likes of a Bryan Bresee here or Gervon Dexter in the 2nd. Emmanuel Forbes also feels like a potential match for the Eagles, and with their interest in him and Dexter a move back into the early 2nd could make sense here. That all said, I don't think Philly likes Kancey at 10 but I think their eyes would light up with a chance to grab him at 30. He'd be a dynamic interior pass rusher for them, something they're not nearly as strong in as they once were. If he's here at 30, he's got to be the pick. This is too big of a steal and nearly a perfect match for The Eagles this late in the draft.
31. Kansas City Chiefs - OT Anton Harrison Oklahoma:
I really thought there would be some late 1st round trades, but once again, this draft has something for everybody and seems to produces a lot of early situations where teams aren't willing to move back. KC has four really strong prospects who fill needs here: Harrison, Zay Flowers, Will McDonald, and Keion White. When we look at this draft class, the biggest drop off for these positions of need appears to be OT which likely bumps a player like Harrison up the board a bit. I doubt KC really trusts what they have at RT in Lucas Niang and their achilles heal has always been when teams can get immense pressure on Mahomes (See the 2021 AFC Championship). Harrison can start there right away with LT upside. Edge is deep as always and KC can grab some solid players there on day 2. As far as WR is concerned, I have little doubt that Flowers is the best available player here but he's extremely similar to several of Mahomes top weapons. KC needs to find a bigger, more physical option that can fill the hole JuJu did last year.
